Before Adobe Illustrator and comic book lettering fonts, comics where lettered by hand. Using nothing by a pencil, a t-square and Ames lettering guide, so today I present to you a video demonstrating on how an Ames lettering guide is used.

Okay Folks,
It's time to focus the skillful hand of letterer and cartoonist Rick Parker. I'm spotlighting Mr. Parker because his unique lettering style of drawing balloon tails that caught my attention. Notice how Spider-Man's balloon tails have a wavy eerie sense to them, giving Spidey a distorted voice and adding to scene.
Have you ever notice how much the word balloon is used outside the comics’ media. It's so common place that we barely notice it. Below are a few examples of the normal everyday use of our friend the word balloon

Tom Orzechowski is one of my favorite letterers, and the go to letterer for writer Chris Claremont. So I decided to go through some of my long boxes and pull out some stellar examples of his work. Theses pages are from New Mutants no.18 a chapter from the now classic Demon Bear Saga.
What I like most about Tom’s work is his use of burst balloons. Something that’s rarely seen in today’s comics. Checkout the RRRAR sound effects on the fourth page and the fifth page it has such a sense of motion. Even his use of specialty balloons as seen on pages two and three rather then using different letterforms is impressive.
Here are some beautiful lettered pages by Ken Bruzenak from Blackjack: Blood & Honor published by Dark Angel Productions. Ken Bruzenak is probably best known for his work on America Flagg, where his lettering skills embellished the art of modern master Howard Chaykin. I really dig how he went for the pulp feel, and his use of the drop caps with the Asian inspired brushstrokes is the sugar.
Gaspar Saladino graces us with his stellar lettering once again at Fair Play Lettering. Showcasing some pages from the Flash 50th Anniversary special, soak it in people it doesn't get better then this.
